How to assign the news: protocol to thunderbird

Somehow the news: URL handler is not associated on my system.

Here is how you can add the protocol to the Gnome url-handlers.

Download this file and run gconftool-2:

$ wget -O news.schema.xml http://www.harald-hoyer.de/linux/news.schema.xml
$ env GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE="" gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule news.schema.xml

Ready. Now restart Firefox and try some links:
